Zavadilová, Šárka ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with men's presence at childbirth. The aim of this work is to give a voice to men - fathers to tell the birth stories from their perspective. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a theoretical framework for the analysis of the construction of identities, the repertoires of fatherhood and gender relations in the family and presents a feminist critique of the childbirth discourses. The empirical part discusses methodology and methods of the research and includes the analysis of narrative interviews with fifteen fathers who were present at birth. The research of this diploma thesis answers following questions: how men talk about the experience of childbirth, how they construct their masculine identity and how they relate to fatherhood (parenthood) during narration. The aim of the research is also to identify their reasons for being present at childbirth, the roles they play at childbirth, and the importance they assign to this event. Male emancipation as the process of seeking identity
Petr, Josef ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Uhl, Michal (referee)
In this work I would like to present the concept of male emancipation as the process of liberation of men from the pressure of culture stereotypes about men and masculinity. Male emancipation is also the inner process of seeking identity which is a synthesis of reflection of sex as a biological predisposition and gender as a culture construction. The concept of male emancipation is the answer to the recent crisis of male identity and is represented with different emphasis in different faces of men's movements. I created the basic typology of these movements and described their "emancipatory potential". As the opposition to feminists ideal types of new man or androgyne I described the realistic type of emancipated man who is not trying to achieve a synthesis of characteristics typically and traditionally considered as masculine or feminine but rather to achieve a compact, consistent and original personality. In the last part of my work I present results of my research "What do men say?" where I analyzed the statements of men who came to the men's groups of the Czech organisation the League of Open Men. As a result I described four basic motivational categories which motivate men to visit these groups and the description of some basic topics which men solve in these groups.
Gender relationships in a novel Life is elsewhere by Milan Kundera
Horčičková, Aneta ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kalnická, Zdeňka (referee)
This thesis discusses gender relationships in the novel Life is elsewhere by Milan Kundera. The first part of the analysis focuses on construction of motherhood and fatherhood, from which eventually results the positive/negative relationships of the child to the parents and on which we can also see the organization of the parenting practice itself. The second part is devoted to the key issue of the mother - son interactions, and therefore it analyzes the psychoanalytic concept of the Oedipal complex and difficulties associated with it, such as the son's dependence on the dominant mother who in addition fully replaces the absent father. I especially concentrate on the effort of the son to free himself from this dependence and on his consequent search for male identity. Methodologically, my text is designed as a combination of archetypal analysis with an interpretative or conceptual analysis, stemming from the approach of the so called resisting reading. This thesis compares traditional concepts with the feminist ones and applies them on the characters of Kundera's novel. Key words: gender relationships, psychoanalysis, archetypes, dominant mother, male identity.

The second part consists of a qualitative survey conducted in open and indoor playgrounds in České Budějovice. By means of anonymous interviews with both fathers and mothers I examined how fatherhood affects and completes male identity and how important it is for men.
